Yelena Akelina, DVM, MS is a Research Scientist and a Director/Instructor in Clinical Microsurgery at the Microsurgery Research and Training lab at Columbia University’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Akelina’s training began as a veterinarian, completing her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Moscow Veterinary Academy before obtaining her Master of Science in Toxicology. She started her career in microsurgery in 1996 as a student intern on the way to earning her veterinary license in New York. Through experience and self-teaching and hard work she became one of the most prominent microsurgery instructors in the world.

Dr. Akelina is one of the founders of IMSS and is an active member of many other domestic and international societies for microsurgery including WSRM, ASRM, RAMSES, and ISEM. Dr. Akelina is also an Honorable Member of the Serbian Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery and Honorable Faculty Member at Queen Mary’s Hospital in London.
Additionally, Dr. Akelina is a Principal Investigator for many microsurgical research projects and is well published in many peer-reviewed journals, with more than 35 publications.
Yelena has been a mentor for many years for many students who are now leading clinical attendings, successful researchers and on their way to their clinical careers nowadays.

The program she runs at Columbia University trains microsurgery to more than 200 surgeons and researchers a year from institutions across the US and more than 70 countries. Over the last 26 years Dr. Akelina has trained more than 4000 surgeons. The primary goal of the training program is to teach surgeons to perform surgery on very small (1mm diameters) vessels and nerves using microscopes, gaining the experience to apply the training to surgery on humans and save lives.

Dr. Mattos’ research background can be classified in the broad area of robotics and artificial intelligence applied to the biomedical area. More specifically, his background includes medical robotics, robot-assisted surgery, laser microsurgery, smart medical devices, medical image analysis, mixed and augmented reality, and biomedical sensors. Dr. Mattos received his BSc in electrical engineering from the Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil), and his MSc and PhD degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the North Carolina State University (NCSU, USA). At NCSU, he worked as research assistant at the Center for Robotics and Intelligent Machines (CRIM) from 2002 until 2007. Since then, he has been a researcher at the IIT’s Department of Advanced Robotics.
Dr. Mattos started to focus his research in the biomedical area during his PhD, which was performed in collaboration with the Animal Models Core facility of UNC Chapel Hill (USA). His doctoral research concerned the development of a novel robotic system for automatic microinjection of genetically modified embryonic stems into mice blastocysts. The success of this early research brought him to Italy for a post-doctoral fellowship at IIT’s Department of Advanced Robotics. At IIT, Dr. Mattos saw the potential to apply his technologies also to human microsurgery, which led him to start a now 12 years-long collaboration with ENT surgeons from Genoa’s San Martino Hospital. This was a defining moment in his research career, in which he expanded his research from applications to cells and animals, to applications that directly involve humans. In addition, this marked the founding of his Biomedical Robotics Laboratory and the beginning of his career as a research team leader. While exploring new research areas in medical robotics, Dr. Mattos maintained his focus on the creation of robotic systems to guide and assist humans in highly delicate and difficult operations. The overall theme of his research can be summarized as “Assistive Systems for Augmented Control”. This highlights his focus on the creation of novel technologies to augment the capabilities and performance of its users beyond humanly possible, enabling the execution of difficult or previously impossible tasks. Notably, this includes work on robot-assisted intravenous catheterization, robotic laser microsurgery, endoscopic surgery, telesurgery, and medical image analysis for computer-assisted detection and diagnosis of diseases (CADe and CADx systems) and surgical guidance.
Dr. Mattos currently leads a team of 12 researchers and technicians at IIT and collaborates closely with other institutions, including hospitals and industry. He has graduated 15 PhD students and is currently supervising another 8 PhD candidates. He is the author/co-author of 6 patents and more than 170 peer-reviewed publications. In addition, he has been a key player in securing over 12 million Euros for research through externally funded projects. He was the PI and coordinator of the European project µRALP – Micro-Technologies and Systems for Robot-Assisted Laser Phonomicrosurgery, and of the TEEP-SLA project, which was dedicated to the creation of new interfaces and assistive systems for ALS patients. Currently, Dr. Mattos is the PI and coordinator of the translational project Robotic Microsurgery, and is leading the work on robotic devices for intravenous access, on Augmented Reality for surgical applications, and on AI systems for disease detection and diagnosis.
